Carbon Offset Program for SCAA Conference Attendees

Attending conference? Join the SCAA in offsetting greenhouse gases! Through a partnership with Trees for the Future, SCAA conference attendees can offset carbon emissions for their Long Beach travel and accommodations by planting trees in coffee growing countries.

For each donation of $6, sixty (60) trees will be planted in a coffee growing country and will offset carbon emissions for the average travel to and lodging at the Long Beach conference.

Extra! Extra! For the fourth year in a row, SCAA will produce its daily conference newspaper at the upcoming Long Beach conference. SCAA’s convention newspaper will be published every morning during the conference with live event news and product coverage. The Morning Cup is provided free and is the first place conference delegates will turn for late-breaking news, feature articles, exhibit photographs and highlights, SCAA updates and new product announcements. Be sure to pick up your copy!




IRC Friends and LOU Members Forum - An open international coffee session

David Griswold, Chair of the SCAA International Relations Council (IRC) will moderate a gathering of LOU members, friends of the IRC and other international attendees. The program will begin with introductions of LOU member countries, brief country updates from LOU member countries, and presentations by the IRC members on the activities of the SCAA. There will also be a special presentation on the important topic of country of origin trademark versus certification of origin marks. This panel will include the legal counsel of the SCAA, Stuart Adelson, Mario Fernandez of Mexico, an expert on Certification marks at origin, and other speakers.

The Roasters Guild Specialty Coffee Association of America would like to invite you to participate in the 2007 Cupping Pavilion in Long Beach, California during the 19th Annual Conference Exhibition. The competition is open to origin countries that are in a cooperative relationship with the SCAA, and to roaster and importer SCAA Members. The Cupping Pavilion is an event intended to provide roasters and green coffee buyers the opportunity to blind-cup carefully vetted and exceptional coffees in a controlled environment. Coffees will be ranked after competition based on the scores provided by the participating cuppers. Those who would like to submit coffees should send ten pounds of unroasted coffee to SCAA offices in Long Beach by April 23, 2007. Please include an email address with your submission. (The purpose of this relatively late date is to allow for as many new crop submissions as possible.) Coffee not selected for inclusion in the Cupping Pavilion will be batch roasted with other non-qualifying submissions and donated to charity.

The cuppings will occur Saturday Sundy from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the final cupping and results occurring on Monday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Roasters' Choice Tasting Competition 2007 (open to everyone)

This event will be held in conjunction with the SCAA’s 19th Annual Conference Exhibition, May 4-7, 2007 in Long Beach, California. The Roasters Choice Tasting Competition is an event intended to highlight the craft of roasting while providing attendees the opportunity to taste some exceptional coffees in a relaxed environment. All exhibition attendees will be provided a ballot with their registration badge allowing them to vote for their favorite; the tasting will be blind. While a “winner” will be announced, based on the results of the balloting, the chief aim of this event is to celebrate the craft of roasting and to enjoy some good tasting coffee during the Conference Exhibition.

The Roaster's Choice Tasting Competition will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m on Saturday and Sunday, and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday. The final results will be tallied and announced on Monday.

Coffee Kids Reception

The Coffee Kids reception at the SCAA Conference, sponsored by Java Jacket, Inc., will be held on Saturday, May 5th in Grand Ballroom B. The reception will begin at 4:30 p.m. with light refreshments and cocktails, followed by a brief program at 5:15 p.m. Presentations will include a welcome by Java Jacket, Inc. and Coffee Kids Founder, Bill Fishbein, as well as words from Rick Peyser, Board of Directors President. Carolyn Fairman, Executive Director, will provide updates on this year’s Coffee Kids projects. Finally, Magali Martínez Villanueva, Project Coordinator of FomCafé in Oaxaca, Mexico, will share her experiences working with coffee-farming communities in developing their own grassroots solutions.
